A Very Cherry Christmas 5
Only the most Scrooge-like of misanthropes would struggle to find something positive to say about Christmas. I love the occasion. I don’t tend to dwell for quite as long on the significance of the date as a Christian might but I certainly value the principles of being highly refreshed in work time and the whole good sprouts to all men malarky. Cherryade Music certainly put a lot of Yo Ho Ho’s into crimbo every year as they invariably mark the occasion with a collection of festive musical cheer. A Very Cherry Christmas 5 is their fifth such CD. As usual it doesn’t wander too far from the jangly indiepop end of the spectrum so anyone seeking huge Spector-like productions may be left feeling they’ve woken up to a walnut and a Satsuma when they’d asked for a PS3 and the Wire boxset. However, like the traditional tin of chocs, if you can avoid gorging on all the gooey centres in one sitting, you’ll find the odd nut cluster or praline crunch more appetising. Das Wanderlust provide the biggest cheer with Someone To Pull Crackers With proving beneath their usual squawky wrongpop exterior there’s actually an extremely talented band. Allo Darlin’s cute folk is always a treat while Sparky’s Magic Piano’s The Escape from Aled Jones and Shrag’s Stop the Revelry compete for delivering the biggest laugh. In fact only the Bobby McGee’s dare to turn up with the sonic equivalent of a garishly motifed handknitted pullover which in 75 minutes of seasonal buffoonery means the little hardworking elves at the Cherryade grotto really have not let us down again.
