Wedding Present headline Refugee Rock benefit

Article written by Ged M - Oct 5, 2015

Refugee Rock has announced that The Wedding Present will be headlining the inaugural Refugee Rock fundraiser on 1 November, 2015 at the Borderline, London.

With a career spanning 30 years, The Wedding Present hold UK chart history (along with Elvis) for having the most UK top 30 singles in one year. Having worked with fellow luminaries like Steve Albini and having influenced generations of rock music with their brand of discordant love-songs, The Wedding Present’s participation marks the commitment of the punk-rock community to help those in need.

Frontman and band founder David Gedge comments; “It was a no brainer. I can’t imagine what it must be like to be living in a constant state of limbo, with no sense of anywhere to call home and nowhere to go that feels safe. We’ll do whatever we can, as a band and as community members, to support innocent people displaced by conflict.”

The Wedding Present join a line-up that with some of the country's most exciting talent, including London’s finest noise-mongers USA Nails, the recently reformed Mower, the solo-musings of Grumbling Fur’s Daniel O’Sullivan, known as Metholite, Hackney dark-pop duo Twin Graves and yacht-punk freaks Scandinavia. Exact stage timings will be decided on the day.

“I saw The Wedding Present play Seamonsters years ago and was blown away,” comments Refugee Rock founder, Mark McCafferty. “Their reputation precedes them in the annals of punk rock history, so the fact that Gedge and the gang said yes has already put this event far beyond my expectations.
I also think that, even in these austere times, £15 is an incredible price for a ticket to see six amazing bands, so I hope people will rock up and rock out. The fact that USA Nails are dashing back from the last day of their European tour to play this demonstrates both the importance of the cause and the power of The Wedding Present."

Refugee Rock will also be providing goody bags for this first 50 through the door and will be running a punk-rock raffle of rarities and signed memorabilia.
