Asobi Seksu
A cheap (but not nasty) stocking filler from New York’s premier dreampopsters, Asobi Seksu. Acoustic At Olympic Studios features versions of ten tracks, chiefly originally from their three studio albums, performed in a stripped back manner in London. The songs had a soporific quality in their earlier incarnation, and here without the layers of keys, they lull you into an even deeper peaceful slumber. Yuki Chikudate’s voice still has a wonderful airy quality, floating above the gentle ditties like Liz Fraser without the hysterics, but musically the tunes sound a little too bare. If you were hearing all these compositions for the first time and female singer songwriters buzz your button, you’d probably love them, but owners of the back catalogue will possibly consider that there’s a few important elements missing.
