Christy & Emily: Superstition
Released on Robert Lloyd’s label (the Nightingales having toured Europe with the New York twosome), this is a weird blend of strange pop and psychedelic-folk. Emily Manzo is a classically trained pianist while Christy Edwards is a punk guitarist and their second album (a third with Faust’s Hans Joachim Irmler is already in the can) mixes the experimental and the unashamedly catchy. I’d say they were influenced by Eric Satie and Yo La Tengo – ‘Tigers’ is certainly a catchy avant-pop tune while ‘Golden Rings’ has the strangest melody and a more classical style. ‘Chicken Little’ and ‘Tidal Wave’ are the best examples of their “strange folk” but their success is in creating a sense that everything is a couple of degrees west of normal; it’s pop with as much character as beauty.
