Daniel Johnston
Daniel Johnston is a singer songwriter from Austin, Texas with a lengthy back catalogue stretching back almost 30 years and an interesting history. Kurt Cobain was a big fan and his patronage led to a fierce bidding war, won by Atlantic. All very normal, I guess, were it not for the fact that Johnston was actually in a mental asylum at the time. He is a manic depressive but his quirky songs have been covered by Beck, Tom Waits, Flaming Lips, Bright Eyes and Sparklehorse among others and listening to this just reissued ‘best of’ comp it’s easy to understand why. If you can get beyond the often poor recordings, Johnston’s voice (a childlike high pitched off key whine) and the frequent duff notes, there’s a wealth of terrific material. What Johnston has is an ear for a decent melody, even if he sometimes struggles to deliver it himself, and accompanied by guitar, piano, chord organ or just chaotic simple percussion the most wonderful lo-fi ditties waft over. Indeed a man who can write something as good as Living Life, the perfect midpoint between the Beatles and Dylan, deserves a cocked ear. Wallow in the kooky bastard’s genius and buy this.
