Dolores O'Riordan No BaggageCooking Vinyl

You know what? ‘No Baggage’ is a masterpiece. The easiest thing in the world would be to slag it off. To become all sniffy and high-minded about it. One could easily tear apart the spot-the-rhymes-coming-a-mile off lyrics ('tranquilizer / desensitize her' for example). Likewise the mid-paced build up with the stilted syllables of each verse. The ominous ‘B’ sections and the anthemic choruses. The typos in the otherwise glossy sleeve, festooned with pictures of our Dolores, at one with nature... Yes, it would be all too easy to play the role of inverted snob, and ridicule this. But, when it comes to putting out a Dolores O'Riordan album, well, you couldn't do much better than this. Eleven songs, two piano-led and quiet, the remainder personal rockouts with standard D.O.R. BIG choruses. Immaculate production lets us appreciate THAT voice. In particular on 'Fly Through', the potential hit.
Do I like this album? Certainly not. But that doesn't mean it's not a masterpiece...
