Jay Reatard - Watch Me Fall
Veteran of countless bands and a man so prolific, that a quiet night in presumably still no doubt involves an eight track recorder and a variety of instruments, Jay Reatard breaks new ground with this album. Not in the sound, which is still largely a frantic riot of catchy punk tunes delivered at breakneck speed. No, apparently this was the first time in his career that he'd actually been forced to enter a studio specifically in order to produce an LP rather than just to lay down a few tracks that he'd already written or just to generally goof around. The outcome may be a tad predictable, if slightly better produced than previous efforts, and the influences clear in the mongpunk barrage, chiefly the Ramones, Damned, Toy Dolls and Devo, but what the heck, it's still good fun. Aware that it needs at least some variation, Reatard briefly tears up his template with the more sensible I'm Watching You, possibly the best track Apples in Stereo never wrote, and There is No Sun, a terrific anthemic ballad but if he he could mix the ratio up a tad more he'd definitely be onto something pretty special.
