Las Robertas: Cry Out Loud
In your Times Atlas of World Indiepop, you don’t expect San Jose, Costa Rica to merit a mention but maybe you should look again at central America on the basis of Las Robertas. The all-girl band sound a little like the Vivian Girls and a little like the Dum Dum Girls, all-sixties garage-influenced handclaps, harmonies and heartbreaks, and they stand comparison with them too. ‘Tele’ has a corking chorus and smooth harmonies while ‘V For You’ is super-spooked elemental rock’n’roll with ethereal voices, and the fuzzed up guitars and crashing drums on the reverb-heavy ‘Damn K’ sound something like the Cramps, with horror-comic lyrics to match. It’s short, direct and very moreish, Las Robertas being the finest Costa Rican export since coffee and Claudia Poll.
