Matt & Kim - Grand
Out a while now but overdue a nod from us, this is the sophomore long player from the synth pop duo Matt and Kim and an enjoyable hook happy celebration of their place of residence - the 'grand' of the album's title is a street in Brooklyn. While there's an element of early 80s keyboard Brit pop here (in particular the early works of Depeche Mode and Soft Cell), there's also a large dollop of the fused sound of what makes Brooklyn such a productive place for bands these days - danceable, confident punchy pop. Less spazzy than some of their previous work, the tunes are largely instant, even if the overall tempo is usually significantly slower than the often hyper electro percussion. Pick of the bunch for all you mp3 pups are the chiming, juddering opener Daylight and the brief pitch shifting anthem Lessons Learned but it's worth a punt in its entirety if you have the cash.
