Music For Your Heart: Turning Marvel
Sandra Zettpunkt, a.k.a. Music For Your Heart, writes gentle, minimalist songs and, apart from a double bass contribution from Volker Zander of Calexico, performs them all herself. The style is mainly early Cat Power, apart from the soft country jangle of ‘The One’, which has echoes of Teenage Fanclub; perhaps not uncoincidentally Raymond McGinley supervised the recording in Glasgow and Hamburg. A couple of the songs have German lyrics but the meaning comes across clearly; the gentle chiming of ‘Her Blue Dots Theory’ creates a meditative mood, while her lucid vocals cuts through the dusk surrounding the purring guitar and soft drumming on ‘Unwound’. It ends on an optimistic note though, the vocals on the warming ‘When the Night Begins’ sounding a bit like a happy Nico . Overall, it has an intimate, late-night feel that occasionally hits the same raw nerve as Cat Power herself.
