My Robot Friend: Soft Core
I don’t hear any trace of the Devo inspiration that Howard Robot’s self-declares but this electronic pop from New York sounds, when it wants to be poppy, like the Pet Shop Boys and Yazoo (Alison Moyet provides vocals on the soulful ‘Waiting’) while it’s like the Postal Service when it wants to be sensitive (‘By Your Side’).
The geeky concept behind the third album seems to have attracted powerful support; the album is released on Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips’ label, and My Robot Friend has been covered and remixed by the Pet Shop Boys, Robbie Williams and Matmos, while he’s opened for the Scissors Sisters and Le Tigre. But it’s not that exotic; it’s just decent deviant synth pop, throwing in a Luna cover (‘23 Minutes In Brussels’), and the odd postmodern wink, particularly the sex-obsessed ‘The Short Game’. Fans of flouncy and flamboyant electronica may enjoy, but I never was that.
