Position Normal
Position Normal are a couple of former art students, Chris Bailiff and John Cushway, who have assembled their third sonic collage of field recordings, samples and ambient sound. It’s very weird, akin to the disconnect you sometimes get listening to Resonance FM – of hearing something otherworldly through a familiar medium. You may already have heard their work if you’ve seen Dead Man’s Shoes and the scene where the bad guys’ kettle is spiked with a cocktail of hallucinogenics. Otherwise, think of it as an eccentric mix of BBC schools music broadcasts, Cassetteboy and the Residents (the latter especially on ‘The Squiggleman’). The Albert Finney dialogue on ‘Fart In A Bottle’ is hilarious, the strange Alvin Stardust sample over ambient noise on ‘I’ve Been Alvin’ is just disconcerting and the off-key instrumentation constantly keeps you off-balance. It’s woozy experimentalism that causes you to feel like you’ve ingested one spoonful of Night Nurse too many, but if you don’t mind a bit of a headfuck, it’s well worth tracking down on tape cassette (told you they were art students) or download.
