The June: Magic Circles
This Italian band didn’t need to name one of their songs ‘Revolver’ for us to know that they exist in a ‘Life On Mars’ world where they’re conscious that it’s 2009 but they’re actually living in 1966. So ‘Daisy’ is utterly Beatles-y, ‘Sketches of Sound’ is the Creation while ‘Big Black Mouth’ could be the Monkees, right down to the riffs. And everything comes smothered in harmonies and jangling guitars. But as much as you can spot the influences (which are never disguised) it’s easy to be caught up in the band’s excitement, especially on the trumpet-augmented ‘Daisy’, and when there are no specific influences (‘Rolling Desperate’) the relentless powerpop is quite a rush. This record uses its influences well and ends up much more than a simple tribute to the 60s.
