The Late Call Golden Tapete Records

The Late Call is the work of the Stockholm-domiciled German, Johannes Mayer, whose first three records had a minimal singer-songwriter approach but for the fourth, Golden, has a full band. Musically, Golden shifts between the poles of 70s Americana and 90s pop. The title track is Californian easy-listening, which flatters itself to be likened to Tim Hardin, while songs like ‘The Pact’ are pure Coldplay slick-pop. Mayer sounds most Chris Martin-esque on the dreamy piano ballad ‘Leave No Trace’ that soars into something stadium-epic, a tendency that several songs share. It’s all well-played, and Mayer has a good melodic sense, but it makes for worthy-but-dull listening.
