Various Artists Revolution in Sound Northern Star

Revolution in Sound is a new compilation by the label that brought us three volumes of Psychedelica. Their latest offering is best described by the strapline on the sleeve: “for rockers, ravers, lovers and gazers”. It collects 17 diverse tracks (a value for money 80 minutes) that crashes from noise-rock into nu-psychedelica to indie to shoegaze.
It sounds like the sort of comp they might play before the bands come on in some dark-painted London venue (the Underworld, say, or the Purple Turtle). It’s well-sequenced and all very competent but there are few standout tracks, the obvious one being the noisy pop fest that is the Manhattan Love Suicides’ 'Clusterfuck'. Maribel sound like the Charlatans, Punk TV make a sound like Air, the cruelly named Hot Zek could be EMF and Ursula Minor’s ‘Sick Fuzz’ is an impressive impression of Spacemen 3, down to the way they chant endlessly “I feel sick but I’m not stopping” in a very Jason Pearce-ian way. It’s not especially revolutionary at all but works if you want a cheap immersion in indie, shoegaze and psychedelia.
