Demo Review

Spiral 25
4-track demo

Article written by James G - Sep 29, 2009

Spiral 25 are, apparently, a ’psychedelic rock band from Oxford’. Uh-oh. They namecheck plenty acts on the bumf with their 4-track demo, including Hawkwind, Ride and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I can’t say I’m looking forward to this, but…

‘Let The Light Shine On’ gets things going, and immediately I’ve got a feeling from this track. Late night. In a car. Wet roads outside. On the way back from some gig or other. Years ago. The radio’s tuned into John Peel. Lighting a fag, and opening the window. ‘Signals’ is next. Pulsing, echoey, early R.E.M. type stuff. There’s space in these sounds. Guitars are allowed to drone, drums are allowed to beat, and the vocal is allowed to weave a pattern over it all. ‘Shadows In Line’ and ‘Today’s Future (Tomorrow’s Past)’ carry on the theme, and maybe it’s all in the production, but I don’t think so. Spiral 25 have mastered that playing loud music quietly thing. This is excellent stuff, full of evocation and atmosphere. Get this on the radio. Late at night…
