Gig Review
Art Garfunkel London, Royal Festival Hall

Art Garfunkel took the stage, over an hour and a half late, unsteady on his feet and mouthing obscenities at the crowd of mainly teenagers and twentysomethings. ‘I ain’t gonna play any of that c***’s f***ing sh*t’ was his retort, when the 50-strong mob begged for a Paul Simon number. Instead, Garfunkel and his ramshackle band of obviously amateur musicians launched into a 10-minute progfest of noise, feedback, out of tune vocals and repeated screaming of four-letter filth. And another. And another. I swear I saw some Emo kids begging the door staff to let them escape from the cacophony, their ears, quite literally, weeping blood.
No, of course it wasn’t like that. The exact opposite, in fact. A gentle, cheese-flavoured evening, peppered with songs which create a surge of joy after the opening bars… It’s THAT one! Scarborough Fair, The Sound Of Silence, El Condor Pasa, Bridge Over Troubled Water… there’s probably little point in me trying to list all the classics aired. Various other songwriter’s tunes provided some contrast and a self-penned number showed the boy has not inconsiderable writing talent himself, but the Simon numbers sounded, well, as good as ever. And that’s very good. And that voice. Still amazing, after all these years. The bloke’s 66 now, for Art’s sake!
Great songs and a superb performance. Of course. Now, back to the young pretenders…
