| Holy Fuck |
Having opened for M.I.A. earlier that night at the McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn, Holy Fuck headlined their own show only a few hours later on June 6th with openers Boy Crisis and Magic Wands at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York. Four members of the Toronto-based group teased and tugged at the crowd’s earstrings as the crescendo of banging drums, snappy synth samples, throbbing bass, and pounding keyboards danced its way higher and higher, like a good ear-jolting chord progression on a good old techno track.
Sandwiched somewhere between math rock and electronica, the band experiments heavily with toy instruments. On that hot June night, the band members could not resist the magnificence of their self-created grooves and bounced up and down on the stage, transmitting the infectious surge of energy to the crowd. At one point, a hopeful lad from the crowd sneaked his way onto the stage for an impromptu dance number, but was whisked away by bulky security who felt that his flailing arms and psychedelic jiggy were nothing but a mockery to the music being played. I thought the bravery he demonstrated was sort of endearing and took away from the fellow’s unfortunate lack of rhythmic timing.
No laptops were used in the production of electronic sounds, as is common among their fellow math rockers, Battles. Using live instruments is the band’s preferred means of creating electronic-sounding effects. They stay away from loops and programming, the result being an authentic, organic sound that pulses right to your core. Common reported after effects of attending a Holy Fuck show (at least ones that I personally experienced after listening to a series of heart-pounding sequences) can be likened to multiple aural orgasmic sequences. No wonder the band has been referred to as electro-pop perverts by NME magazine.
Holy Fuck is made up of a rotating cast of Brian Borcherdt, Graham Walsh, Matt McQuaid, & Matt Schulz, with Brad Kilpatrick, Loel Campbell. The guys were formed in 2004 and came out with their first self-titled release in 2005. Their relentless touring has paid off, Holy Fuck having been hailed as one of the top three performances at the Glastonbury 2007 festival. They are currently on tour, abrasively banging their way into a city near you.
