The Mules / Bridport Dagger / Naseby Fox
Brixton Windmill

Article written by Paul M - Sep 20, 2009

Naseby Fox are named after a key battle prior to Cromwell’s overthrow of the monarchy but I doubt Lizzie Windsor is overly concerned that this three piece are ever likely to rabble rouse the populis. The dapper frontman looks like he’s been given the key to Billy Childish’s wardrobe with his turn of the 20th century clobber and the music is also of another era, quite Vaudevillian, with the crooned carefully enunciated delivery, harmonies and the frequently macabre subject matters. Couple it with an accordion and, well, it’s not your normal indie fayre. Trouble is, novelty factor aside, it’s rather bloody irritating and I can’t imagine anyone choosing to listen to it in the comfort of their own home.

Bridport Dagger look great, three lads with cool haircuts and the natural symmetry of having a skinny left handed guitarist on one side of the stage and a svelte right hander on the other. They may not have a bass but the opener is a mighty fine throbbing slice of rockabilly rumble, titled simply enough Rock and Roll, but from then on they settle into a gloomy blues vibe, highly charged and atmospheric, like the Bad Seeds or Gallon Drunk but fronted by Roy Orbison. Indeed in frontman Jason they have a quite dashing and talented figure head, they just need a few more tunes and, dare I say a bass, to complete the package. Still they have a national tour support slot with the Rumble Strips so some heads are already turning.

The Mules
The Mules
I love The Mules, as does the new Doctor Who, Matt Smith, apparently. Indeed I can think of no better soundtrack to warding off aggressive alien life form than the racket created by a bunch of donkey/horse hybrids. These Mules have an eclectic approach to songwriting, a frontman who’s a drummer and a liquid attitude towards band member numbers, with performers dipping in as and when they please. It all makes for an interesting hotch potch of entertainment, with strings, keys and guitars taking turns to be focal points. One minute it’s Sparks style keyboard pop, the next oddball folk or melodic indie. In amongst a few new songs, they also dig out an old un in This is Your Life, a shimmering lost classic from Ed Seed’s highly recommended Pick Your Own comp. All this and the Windmill’s traditional pleasant atmosphere for a recession friendly £3? Bingo!
