Titus Andronicus London, Hoxton Bar and Kitchen

New Jersey is home to plenty of blue-collar rock'n'rollers, like Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny and (at a pinch) Jon Bon Jovi. Titus Andronicus have about 20 years on that lot (50 years in the case of Southside Johnny) but they seem to fall into the same category. Live, they're a mix of shouty, boozy, moshworthy Clash-meets-Pogues punk-pop, especially their magnificent title song. But there's a keg party in a student basement somewhere that's missing their main act this evening; Titus Andronicus sound born to crank out simple rock'n'roll all night. Which they do, thrashing through their own songs, conjuring up a manic version of 'Roadrunner' and playing 'Wipeout' right after one of their own songs that sounds exactly like 'Wipeout' but isn't. There’s plenty for the little hobbits in front to mosh to, while Titus Andronicus’ frontman, Andrew Cedermark, who looks just like a dissolute Brendan Behan, is a fount of funny stories that make us feel less murderous than usual, having had to trek to Cock-Central (Hoxton) to see them. It's a very picaresque, entertaining evening full of a rock'n'roll spirit, although it isn't exactly a revolutionary night.
