What Would Jesus Drive are two people (that sound like twenty) and a drum machine cruelly nicknamed Hawking. Their shtick is sparky electropop with a hard guitar edge and the set contains more swearing than the Profanisaurus. Tim and Amy bounce around like Duracell bunnies on PCP, playing on either side of the stage and then standing together nostril to nostril for the choruses as only a married couple or people with no hang ups about personal space can do. ‘Hawking’ is a harsh taskmaster, refusing to allow its human bandmates any time between songs for a breather, but this ensures that the set has no lapses, just one hi-octane powerpop moment after enough. Highlights are the pisstaking view of marriage ‘I Think We Walked Into This’, the gang anthem ‘Girls Are In Charge’ and, of course, the wondrous ‘Boomtown Twats’, 90 seconds of concentrated evilthink wrapped up in an incongruously melodic overcoat.
Sparkadia are from Sydney, Australia and are said to make “intelligent, thoughtful pop”, though the last band to have that description attached was the Guillemots and look what a load of progressive tosh they produced. Like many of their countryfolk they’re stomping round Europe this summer so you’re likely to encounter their elaborate 80s Police-style pomp rock on the road, so take that as a warning if you’re not a Q-Magazine reading bland-o. Respect is due to guitarist Tiffany Preece who braved the Dublin Castle barefoot; hope you’d had your shots! The Shutes hail from the Isle of Wight, although they’re not as stoner-weird as The Bees, and give you a mildly psychedelic Chinese burn from their Neil Young/ Kinksy music.
