Blow Up's Metro Club to close
On Tues 20th Jan 2009 The Metro Club, 19-23 Oxford Street, London will close due to the proposed Tottenham Court Road Station extension. The owners have been notified by Transport For London that the venue is to be acquired by a compulsory purchase order, under the Crossrail Act.
The owners are looking for new premises to relocate the venue to but have yet to find one suitable. The final club night will be Sat 17th January 2009, which will be the Blow Up Club night, currently in its 15th year.
The venue was in a basement, with an shape not entirely suited to gigs and a sound system that sometimes struggled but it was non-corporate, independent and had a fantastic central London location. It also hosted debut UK appearances from The Killers and Kings of Leon, as well as early shows by Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kaiser Chiefs, as well as hundreds of other new and breaking acts.
