Alela Diane The Pirate’s Gospel Names

Alela Diane is a folk singer from Nevada City, California, home town of Joanna Newsom, who makes music as delicate as the lace she handstitched to hold the first, self-released, copies of this album in the US. The songs are centred round family and nature while, musically, she has one foot in Devendra’s ‘new folk’ camp and another in the ‘old time country’ one, populated by the likes of Gillian Welsh and Jolie Holland. Although the tracks are built around Alela and her acoustic guitar, she has various support, including an 8 year old and 5 year old in the choir that accompanies the sweetly melodic ‘Pieces of String’. The two bonus tracks ‘Heavy Walls’ and ‘Gypsy Eyes’ are a lot better than most bonus tracks seem to be but the outstanding song is the title track, with its “yo ho ho” chorus and the glitch in Alela’s voice complemented by the rough baritone of Tom Menig and Matt Gottschalk. More proof that you can shuffle the folk deck and continue to be dealt an ace.
