The first album from Australian duo Andrew Coates and James Lee was a concept album broadly based around Altamont and the end of the hippie dream. The follow up is more straightforward, a combination of hyper-rhythmic Krautrock and spacey, shoegazing sounds. They mix that with a strong Eastern influence on songs like ’13 Days’, which sounds like a Calcutta Cocteau Twins. Vocals mostly give way to a raw guitar and synth-washed instrumental sound, apart from the reflective spoken word ‘Valiant’ and mantra-like ‘The Path’, but the best track is the anthemic Swervedriver-meets-Spiritualised clash of ‘Simple Plan’. A lot of the album’s personality is borrowed from older sources but Black Cab add a pretty appealing darkness to these songs.
