Emil Svanängen understands pop music: 10 3-minute songs that collectively just break the half hour barrier means you’re left wanting more, which is always a good place to be. It’s gentle, catchy, indie-folk, located somewhere between Belle and Sebastian and Sufjan Stevens, and played completely (bar, presumably the female backing vocals) by Emil himself. This allows him to drop in all sorts of instruments, from clarinet to harmonium, and to extend himself into showtunes territory on songs like ‘No One Can Win’, but the overall mood is a slightly melancholic pop one. The sweetest moments include the gently swelling and infectious sounds of ‘I Am John’ and the big jangly pop moments of ‘Carrying A Stone’, while the indiepop of ‘And I Won’t Cause Anything At All’ will sit very well with floppy-fringed fans of B&S. The quality levels are kept topped up after the great ‘Sologne’ album of last year and, generally, Loney, Dear keep the Swedish pop flag flying high.
