"Devastating Sky is one of the songs not to scare your granny with its language", so said the review of the download-only single from earlier this year by Simon Breed. This is the mini-album that proves that statement, from opener Cunts, Pricks, Wankers and Shits to closer, track 5, Horse With No Cock , the air is blue.
This is in no way a cover up for ability however, Simon clearly has that in spades. Stating that, the solo singer songwriter’s voice is in the Jeff Buckley mould but the opening track shows scary similarities and if it wasn’t for the lyrics it would not feel out of place played back to back. The theme that runs through these songs seems to be one of bullying and getting on with life despite the best efforts of those that go about derailing the route of an easy life.
Star Of Nepal is dirtier both lyrically and sonically and showcases more talent. Hopefully talent will be enough to get Simon recognition as, let’s be honest, this is never going to be played on breakfast radio. The Brother Song is more literature than lyrical until the mariachi backing appears and The Glory Of Your Face is overlong but these are followed by the great closer. The final word on this CD is cock, whilst swearing is not big or clever is the commonly held belief this goes a long way to disproving that theory. This may not sell out but then neither will Breed, buy it on 10” or CD but don’t listen with mother.
