The Bulbs are a UK quartet. This album may be called ‘Slightly Inperfect’ but it’s actually very imperfect and brilliant at the same time. It starts with ‘Slightly Inperfect Overture’ – a 30 second musical composition which is littered with bicycle bells, and anything else to hand it would seem, and then dives into the most eclectic selection of songs that I have ever come across on an album.
‘Wake up call’ is the most bizarre one on here – a Stephen Hawkins-sounding vocal-led track accompanied by music that belongs to The Wurzels’ ‘Combine Harvester’ song. Yes, picture that if you will. Just two songs away from this is ‘Oh Kathy’ which is a harmonica led track that passes for the love child of the Kings of Leon and Bob Dylan (if they ever decide to reproduce together). ‘Suck it and see’ the singer suggests and you’re going to have to with this album because I don’t think I can find words in the dictionary to explain what I have just listened to.
The thirteen tracks embrace too many different music styles for me to categorise this album. The last song on here, ‘Navigation Road’ begins with rain effects and is really soothing to listen to and doesn’t belong on here but then nothing does!
The Bulbs call themselves Alternative/experimental/other and never before has a cap fitted better. Some people will love this album, some people will welcome deafness rather than listen to it again but nobody will forget it. For the record, I love it.
