Who’d have thunk it? Selling out a lively KCLSU, they’re almost pop stars now with their hit single (people dancing to Herman Düne? Unprecedented!), though they’re kept the quirky, hairy charm that endeared us to them in the beginning. Now André’s no longer with them, David has become the clear leader and focal point, keeping up the banter and staying in the spotlight for 90 minutes (and that’s not counting the time he’s shared the stage with Turner Cody playing TC’s songs). He’s become the showman and looks imposing, with an almost rabbinical authority.
Ever prolific, there are new songs (‘My Baby’s Not Afraid of Sharks’) and songs from the Not On Top album, though the focus is on the major label Giant. Underlining the new confidence there are cover versions: a tender ‘Blue Moon’ (inspired by the Marx Bros rather than Man City) and a stunning version of Dylan’s ‘Heart of Mine’, which come at virtually the start and end of the set. In between, there are a string of great moments: ‘Not On Top’ played like a funky Velvet Underground; the call and response between David and Angela Carlucci from the Baby Skins on the skittery ‘I Wish That I Could See You Soon’; the extended version of ‘Walk Don’t Run’ complete with David’s guitar solo; plus the heavily percussive ‘Good For No One’. As at previous gigs, the band troop off for David to play the funny, soulful folk tale ‘Song of Samuel’ on his ukulele before concluding as a band with a very oriental-sounding ‘Baby Bigger’ and finally ‘I’d rather Walk Than Run’.
It won’t always be this way; David said in the interview with us that mood, audience reaction and just who’s in the band that night all affect what and how they play. But on nights like this, when all planets are in alignment, the effect is stellar; they’ve lost half their songs by choosing not to play André’s but – however much you love André’s contribution to the band – it has no effect on quality. So sit back and marvel how quality will out!
