I’ve always had a soft spot for Dogs; while most of the East London post-Libertines scene bands ended up caked on Poptones’ pants or back in Burger King, Dogs pissed up a different lamppost. That was partly luck, mostly talent: they released some great, anthemic singles on Island and they’ve managed to keep it up now they’re back on an indie label (one day there’ll be a Dogs’ singles collection and it will be mighty).
‘Dirty Little Shop’ is gritty, earthy power-pop with a fierce chorus and some coruscating lyrics, sung in Johnnie Cooke’s best Weller-wail: “the coldest place in the betting shop is by the litter bin – you lost the lot”. If you like that (and you will), the second track ‘Trouble with Honesty’ is even better. An overlooked A-side, it’s a song full of anticipation in the verses that builds up to a magnificent chorus. There are two great songs here on just one single: that’s more than the Paddingtons wrote in a whole career! Dogs are The Bollocks.
