If the thought of listening to anything by a singer songwriter fills you with a fear based on years of suffering self indulgent whiny twaddle delivered by someone whose ambitions reach no higher than being the next David Gray, then I’m with you, brother. But the life of a music reviewer means no door should remain permanently shut and even those marked “Polo Necked Nonce With Piccolo - Do Not Open” have to be left slightly ajar. Luckily, there are occasionally surprises and this is one of them. A galloping drumbeat and swift acoustic plucking pitch if this was a meal it would be somewhere between a breakfast of porridge and a lunch of refried beans. Is it celtic mysticism, all billowing mists and huge wicker men or country yeehaw with misbehaving assess? Whichever, I like it, even the ambitious attempt to turn the Jesus and Mary Chain’s Just Like Honey into a ‘spine tingling’ ballad works. I raise my hat. It’s either a Tam O’Shanter or Stetson, I just can’t be sure…
