The Brazilians and the Swedes have brought a splash of colour to international football for many years with their eye-catching yellow shirts and stereotypically sexy supporters. Now the two nations seem to be making a twin-pronged assault on the world of indie-pop too, bringing similar levels of bright and breezy beauty.
The latest arrival from the European side of the indie invasion is one-man phenomenon, Emil Svangängen a.k.a. Loney, dear. I Am John opens like fellow natives Herman Dune, but takes on a life of its own sixty seconds in with the introduction of some very twee xylophone, followed by further layers of instrumentation and lovely female harmonies. Whilst not as immediate as a Young Folks or We’re From Barcelona, it’s distinctly charming nonetheless, proving that the Swedes clearly have plenty more good stock at home.
