‘Postcode’ is a noisy, guitar-led four and a half minutes that seems to have a chip on its shoulder. Supposedly preparing to inherit The Jam and The Clash’s role as spokespeople for gritty realities of working class life, Orphan Boy show none of the lyrical prowess or musical subtleties which made Weller and Strummer such important figures. Lines like ‘burnt out cars like cigarettes’ and ‘fists all clenched like cannonballs’ mean that the cringe factor doesn’t go away, even when the song gets going.
Flip ‘John Mellor’ is better, yet still doesn’t cut the mustard, and again purely demonstrates how far away from Mr Mellor’s talent they are. And, the fact that they appear to be on the verge of ‘making it’, is demonstrable of the paucity of good music around at present. Ho hum.
