Ripchord Backstabber 1965

Once again NME have manufactured a scene but built it on pretty flimsy evidence. If the suspect, ahem, “Best Midlands” acts trumpeted so far, namely The Twang and The Enemy, have left you colder than a penguin slurping on an ice pop then the odds on these Black Country punky popsters winning you over may be low. Sadly despite the presence of rather nice 60s harmonies and riffs, with Backstabber the young pups of Ripchord have not delved into their parents’ dusty old 45s for inspiration. Alas for the meat of the song they clearly looked no further than the biggest selling indie phenomenon of recent times, the Arctic Monkeys, and from under their simian snouts practically pilfered the hook from “I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor”. Yes, this is perfectly adequate powerpop, suitable for permaloop on XFm, it’s just not that original.
