Named after a legendary training school for South American criminals, this is guitarist Brandon Curtis’s first project since leaving Secret Machines. Now joined by, among others, the Dehaza twins (Alejandra and Claudia) from post-rock experimentalists On!Air!Library!, the expressive and addictive rhythms of ‘My Cabal’ (repetitive piano riff, thumping then splashy percussion and subtle guitar noodling) sound like Spiritualised or Medicine, while the sultry female vocals float in the ether like Liz Frazer’s. The Cocteau Twins connection is reinforced on the flipside remix by Robin Guthrie, who swathes the song in keyboards for poppier effect. It’s fresh, exciting and full of promise for Curtis’ post-Secret Machines future.
