Turner Cody Liza Boy Scout Recordings 7”

Those who’ve seen Turner Cody live or know him through his presence on the New York ‘antifolk’ scene will be surprised by the lushness of his first single for new label Boy Scout Recordings (founded by DJ Tim Love Lee). It’s a far cry from the singer-songwriter stereotype: his Leonard Cohen-ish delivery is matched with old-timey jazz and a whooping clarinet on ‘Liza’ while the stream of conscious lyrics and poetic imagery of 'Susannah', mixed with folk and jazz, take the city to the country. It’s a liberating blast of the eclectic and exotic, confounding and exhilarating in equal measures, and shrugging off any antifolk pre-conceptions.
