Leeds has really been a hot bed of new bands over the last couple of years, with varying degrees of sanity! Hot on the tails of iLiKETRAiNS’ sense of stranger than average song themes, i concur pile in with tracks about a South Korean stem cell scientist as well as the extinction of the prehistoric crocodile. It’s not necessarily obvious from the beginnings, but it’s pertinent to note that these two tracks, Decimal Places and Exits Are Blockades respectively, are the better on this debut EP.
With vocals sometimes reminiscent of Bernard Sumner, there’s an overall spacious quality about the arrangements with a similar musical style to The Open. The band cite The National and Mogwai as influences - the latter can definitely be heard. If the band can marry their lyrical ideas with an improvement in the musical side of things and a sharpening of the delivery of these themes, then slow burning grandeur could beckon.
