Alasdair Roberts In Dispraise of Hunger Drag City Records

From his eighth and self-titled album, Alasdair Roberts’ new single ‘In Dispraise of Hunger’ (a lovely, antiquated phrase) is located within the folk tradition but has avant-garde undertones, locating it in the ‘now’ rather than the ‘then’. His guitar and expressive voice are simplicity itself, rounded out with fluttering woodwind and accompanied by The Crying Lion vocal quartet. For all that simplicity, the themes are big - the effect of hunger “of the belly and of the soul” – but any mournfulness is sweetened with a glorious chorus.
