Alela Diane featuring Alina Hardin Alela & Alina

If you’ve seen Alela Diane live this year, you’ll have noticed she shared the stage with a statuesque young singer, Alina Hardin, the younger sister of Alela’s schoolfriend back in Nevada City. Their collaboration is out now on (limited edition) vinyl, six tracks that are accurately subtitled on the sleeve: “a collaboration of old and new and borrowed”. This is simply played, just voices and guitars. Alela’s songs have her familiar, slightly austere voice while Alina’s sole composition has a Laurel Canyon 70s singer-songwriter feel. There are neat folk covers (‘Bowling Green’, ‘Matty Groves’) but the one that works best is the version of Townes Van Zandt’s confessional ‘Rake’. It’s a back to basics style that shows off some sweet harmonies and reflects Alela Diane’s more traditional musical upbringing.
