Some reviews are just so easy to write. Sometimes you hear something that’s obviously so good that the problem is trying to decide which aspect is the most praiseworthy. Is it the foot-tapping, up, up music itself? Is it the sweet, unaffected vocal, reminiscent of Helen McCookerybook of The Chefs or Wendy Robinson of The Popinjays? Is it the smart theme of the song?– in this case, self-conscious old punks not wanting to dance with their girlfriends. The idea is further explored through the song, mentioning Black Flag and Fugazi, before ending with a pastiche of ‘You’re The One That I Want’, just to embarrass him further, you see. Brilliant.
The other 2 tracks, ‘Dear Stephen Hawking’ and ‘Heartbeat Chilli’ show she’s not a one-trick pony, and I can’t wait for the album. It warms the heart to hear such simple, wonderful, quality pop like this. Simple, yet so hard to get right. She shows us you don’t have to be clever-clever to be clever.
Allo, Darlin’ will, quite plainly, become, if not huge, then hugely popular with a great many people.
