Two things seem to work against the band initially; there’s that mouthful of a name (borrowed from a disturbing 1768 painting by Joseph Wright, and sounding like a post-rock band’s moniker) and the perception of too-cool that surrounds the band. Yet a listen to the record convinces that there’s substance behind the style, and that substance is guttural garage rock. The thumping drums and primeval guitar suggest that they’re the British equivalent of some of our favourite Brooklyn lo-fi bands, C-Bird’s vocals seem inspired by Karen O, and their YouTube channel makes you think you’re watching a satanic Shangri Las. These songs are speedy, short and intense pop tunes, with the angry yowling on ‘Only in Death’ truly surprising/scary, and the single leaves you craving to hear much more. Definitely ones to watch in 2010.
