Arms Are We All In This Together? Rocket Girl 7”/CD

There are 12 arms in Arms, owned by six solo artists (including five lead singers) of four nationalities, within a single entity marshalled by Zachery Stephenson, former singer in Special Needs. Since they have such variety, you’d correctly guess that there’s diversity in the music, four tracks of which appear on this debut single (in its CD version; you just get ‘Are We…’ and ‘Syria’ on the limited clear vinyl 7”).
‘Are We All In This Together?’ has immediate impact with its chiming guitars and pretty melodies, though the lyrics hint at something more maudlin. ‘You’re On The Right Track’ and ‘Graham Greene’ are examples of an energetic, animated Americana, the latter impressing us with the agitated rhythms of the Violent Femmes. Only ‘Syria’ leaves you wondering at their motives, an epic, emotional big rock ballad. With six individual talents behind the band, the single is a debut with huge potential but who knows which of the directions indicated here they’ll take?
