Avi Buffalo What’s In It For SubPop Records 7”

Avi Buffalo is both the name adopted by Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, an 18 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Long Beach, CA, and the name of the band he formed with Sheridan Riley (drums), Arin Fazio (bass) and Rebecca Coleman (keyboards, vocals). Blog noise has been severe for this band, leading to an invitation to SXSW, a SubPop contract and this, their debut single.
It’s romantic pop, fried in the glare of the California sun and the 1960s. ‘What’s In It For’ has a blisssful melody and soaring chorus, sounding not unlike the Shins fronted by Wayne Coyne. Had it been two and a half minutes, it would have been near perfect; sadly it can’t sustain five minutes and loses the killer impact that it starts with. The same fate befalls ‘Jessica’, which over-embellishes its Beatles-y pop with stompy, shakey, jagged extras. Jury’s verdict is: flawed but intriguing.
