Blitzen Trapper don’t get sufficient credit, following two great albums of powerful country/folk Americana with a psychedelic buzz. They’re a six-piece from Portland, Oregon and their new EP is a fantastic place to start if you’re a BT virgin. ‘Black River Killer’ is one of the standout tracks on the second album Furr, a dark gothic ballad told from the point of view of an amoral murderer, in tones both intensely funny and musically gripping, and reminiscent in story form to Neil Young and Bob Dylan. The other six tracks were previously only available on a tour CD-R. ‘Big Black Bird’ is noisy Southern country-rock, but the other tracks are more melancholic, with the bluesy ‘Silver Moon’ and the Super Furry psych-pop of ‘Going Down’ worth tracking down. It’s impressive stuff with a strong wow factor: Blitzen Trapper just don’t get sufficient credit…
