Less than a year after their unsung debut album 'Down Like Gold', which was cruelly overlooked in most end of year polls, the brothers Champion (hence the name Champs) return with a follow-up, 'Vamala', in February. There was something churchly about their music, but not in a gospel way. Perhaps it was the haunting production and melodies combined with those choirboy vocals.
New single 'Desire' follows on nicely from that record and is made from the same ingredients, the only difference here is that they've perhaps pushed things forward slightly, maybe due to having better recording facilities and a better idea of their sound. 'Desire' is that bit smoother but still leaves dreamy atmospherics dancing in its wake. Whether they can ever crack the charts will likely depend on luck, as this certainly isn't Radio 1 fodder, but it is both easy to listen to and incredibly well made, so perhaps the ears of Mercury judges will be pricked up and give them a boost towards more widespread acceptance. They deserve it.
