These days, only the dinosaurs of major-labeldom seem to release records to schedules. Elsewhere, things just seem to appear, without notice. I found this in Rough Trade one evening and I made the inspired decision to buy this fantastic four track EP. Dan Melchior is a Surrey-born and North Carolina based singer-songwriter. Some of his prolific releases are garage-rock (he’s collaborated with Childish, Golightly and the Medway set) but here he’s much more English-indie-influenced. ‘Daylight Robbery’ could be Swell Maps or the Television Personalities as Dan M(elchior) sounds more like Dan T(reacy) when he complains, deadpan style, about poor service: “your lack of regard for your customers is absolutely stunning”. For ‘A Delicate Genius Backstage’ he intones a prose-poem about a dull band in the style of John Cooper Clarke with art-rock backing by the Fall. Both are excellent. As are the tracks by San Francisco’s Fresh & Onlys. A version of ‘Black Coffin’ appears on the Grey-Eyed Girls album, but here it’s a more doomy psych-pop number with shades of Crystal Stilts, while ‘A Taste of Hunger’ is fast and catchy Mekons-esque punk-pop. Cracking bands, splendid songs, and now you know it’s out there, there’s no excuse for not tracking it down.
