Dirty Viv Teeth Lax Recordings

I was anxious about googling their name but “Dirty Viv” produces less smut (and fewer hot dates) than you’d think. That reflects this London band – they’re a little risqué without being really “dirty”, rather like the Carry On genre that inspired them (“Charles Hawtry is our primal well” they claim). I’m not sure the assertions for them as garage punkers stand up - there’s some grungy fuzz attaching to ‘Teeth’, which owes something to the Cramps and the Jesus and Mary Chain, but it’s a pedestrian effort. ‘Clingy Baby’ is better, a deranged dismissal of high maintenance lovers, while ‘Soho’ sounds a little like a pubcrawling Kinks. You think they’re going to shock you but, in the end, their walk on the wild side turns out to be disappointingly softcore.
