Don’t Tread On Spiders are led by Mr Sonny Day (another one?) and this is their follow up to last year’s ‘Monomyth’ EP. ‘Russian Doll’ gets us going, featuring the kind of angular, spacey, mid-tempo kind of rock I personally dislike, but the Fire Enginesy change bit and backing vocals reminiscent of a young The Edge rescue this song. Too much reverb on the drums, I reckon.
‘Get Up And Go’ is a Go! Teamy effort with more than a touch of The Vapors’ second finest moment about it (News At Ten being their best, of course). ‘Wasted You’ is slower – some might say ponderous – and sounds like a Dean Friedman b-side. Shame it wasn’t called ‘Wasted Youth’. A Dean Friedman b-side written about the 1980s East London Goth-Rockers… now, I’d pay to hear that…
We end with ‘Like A Cloud’, featuring a beginner’s chord progression and I can’t tell if it’s the bass, drums or guitar that are out of time. Whatever. Again, the interesting lyrics save this song. The whole EP is somewhat ‘ramshackle’, and Don’t Tread On Spiders admire the work of The Duke Spirit, Joy Formidable, Spoon and Pavement. So there you go.
