Elizabeth Fraser Moses Rough Trade 12”

Elizabeth Fraser has one of those great distinctive voices of pop, but it’s one that’s been heard too little since the Cocteaus and rarely in its own right. The death of her friend Jake Drake-Brockman was the sad catalyst for her releasing ‘Moses‘ in celebration of his life, and it’s a fine tribute, putting that rich and evocative voice at the centre of woozy, dubby Middle Eastern-sounding rhythms. I can hear Jah Wobble and the Funboy Three in there, but Liz’s voice rightly dominates, sounding as wonderful as ever, though it’s less ethereal and wooshy now. The remixes on the flipside are wise enough to highlight Liz’s voice; Thighpaulsandra’s version could be a movie soundtrack while Spaceland’s remix is the sound of a sinister orchestra. Released in a limited edition of 900 on heavy vinyl, it’s a fascinating reappearance that deserves to herald more solo releases.
