Evans The Death Expect Delays Fortuna Pop! Records

This squares the circle of marrying downbeat lyrics to uplifting pop. While the words of ‘Expect Delays’ are full of transport-related misery (“someone threw themselves onto the track again/ I really should learn to drive but I just don’t trust myself with the lives of others”) the music is infectious, excitable 90’s noisepop with its scrambling of fuzzy guitars, luxuriant keyboard sound and swooning, woozy, air-punching chorus. Hearing it, you might think of Lush and Stereolab but there are no comparisons with Katherine Whitaker’s majestic voice. It’s edgy and unsettling but, at the same time, incredibly catchy.
