Frankie & The Heartstrings Hunger Rough Trade 7”

There’s a lot of blog buzz and PR puffery around Sunderland’s Frankie & The Heartstrings at the moment. ‘Hunger’ is a pretty good starter; it sounds like the first line-up of Dexy’s (helped by Frankie Francis’ Rowlands-style yowling) with its rebel stance, gang-swagger and anthemic chorus: “we’re waiting for you/ we’re waiting for you/ to come out tonight”. But the b-side, ‘Famine’, is pretty average pop that lands without making much of an impression.
On the evidence of the very limited 10” live album on their own PopSex Records, they’re a good time pub-rock band but not much more. They’re influenced by Franz Ferdinand and Postcard Records, with maybe a touch of Roxy Music shining through the cracks, but I was less impressed by the music that by the excellent fanzine that comes (together with canvas bag, badges and hilarious Sunderland postcard) with the record. An entertaining bunch but not the next big thing.
